Thinking

From tools to systems

A tool becomes more valuable when its information, decisions, actions, and ownership are connected.

A tool solves one part of a task. A system explains how the work moves.

When examining a workflow, map four things:

  1. Information — what enters the process and where it comes from.
  2. Decision — who or what decides what happens next.
  3. Action — the work that changes the state of the process.
  4. Outcome — the evidence that the action was useful.

This map often reveals that the next useful build is not another isolated interface. It may be a clearer handoff, a small integration, a decision rule, or a way to make state visible.

Systems thinking keeps technology in its proper role: leverage inside a workflow, not the objective by itself.
